In our first meeting we observed the emergence of pop music in 1950's America, "the birth of rock 'n roll". First of all, Frank and Ella, Peggy, Johnny and Connie paving the way for Elvis and Buddy, Don and Phil, Eddie,Bobby and Johnny, then Ricky, Ray and Roy. Samples of their hit records went down well. In our second meeting, we listened to examples of the songs of a dozen of Canada's most popular performers, poets, singers and songwriters, each and every one. It was clear that the poetical works of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, k d lang and Rufus Wainwright and the jazzy Diana Krall with their somewhat introspective songs had only rather limited and esoteric appeal compared with the more crowd-pleasing works of Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, Paul Anka and Daniel Powter.
